Cheryl Chambers Announces Retirement

Cheryl Chambers, who first got her start in banking 47 years ago, has announced her plans to retire at the end of this year.

Cheryl began her banking career through a high school course her senior year that allowed her to work during the afternoons for a bank in Spencer, Iowa. When Cheryl moved back to Charles City in 1997, she started with First Security.

“My dad always liked to say he put in a ‘good word’ for me with Charlie Newman,” said Cheryl. “Sorry, Charlie, but thanks Dad!”

Since then, Cheryl has been in several banking roles. These include front-line positions such as Teller and Retail Banker work, as well as behind-the-scenes jobs such as loan operations and data services, the latter being where she’s spent the majority of her career.

In 2017, she became an Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) after several months of seminars, many hours of studying, and passing a test. Her achievement proved that she possessed a deep understanding of and experience in specific Automated Clearing House (ACH) subjects, as well as a broad knowledge of concepts that relate to the payments system. Having an AAP on staff helps banks manage ACH network use and it enhances a financial institution’s risk management profile.

“I would not have been able to achieve this without the support of the bank. I have gained a lot of expertise and knowledge earning this certification,” said Cheryl.

Cheryl explained that the knowledge gained from a decades-long career in banking has served her well over the years, but what matters most to her are the connections formed with customers and coworkers.

“I have to say, the friends I have made throughout the years, both in customers and in coworkers, is by far the most valuable asset I am leaving with. I will miss the day-to-day interaction with everyone!”

Operations Manager Amy Wilson reflected on Cheryl’s impact at the bank, saying, “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Cheryl for eight of my thirteen years in banking. She has been my trainer, colleague, and friend, and she has taught me—and many others—so much about Operations and ACH services. Cheryl has always been a thoughtful sounding board and a dependable source of advice. We’re excited for her to enjoy retirement, but she will be deeply missed.”

First Security will be honoring Cheryl with a private celebration at the end of this month. While Cheryl doesn’t have big plans for her post-bank life, she is looking forward to spending more time with all of her grandchildren and returning to a few hobbies that she enjoys.
