First Security Foundation Donates $10,000 to City of Floyd for Pickleball Courts

Flourishing communities provide places for people to gather – restaurants, stores, parks, or coffee shops. Shared spaces fortify connections, create common interests, and benefit everyone in the community.

Pickleball, a popular recreational activity, was created in the spirit of community. When two families used ping-pong paddles, a perforated, plastic ball, and a badminton court to entertain themselves, pickleball began fostering relationships. It eventually evolved into a national pastime, bringing people together across the US, with 8.9 million players recorded in 2023. (USA Pickleball National Governing Body)

The Lions Park Pickleball Project is strengthening the community by repurposing the old tennis court at Lions Park in Floyd, IA. With two new pickleball courts, locals will enjoy the nice weather this summer, creating long-lasting memories with their neighbors, families, friends, and loved ones – their community.

Mike Zelenak, Chairman of the Lions Park Pickleball Project, said, “The Floyd City Council voted unanimously to renovate the park. We all know there will be an increase in physical activity and neighborhood camaraderie for the public. Residents of the area will benefit from this through stronger relationships, exercise, and fun!”

The project will cost an estimated $95,000, with funds going towards painting the new courts, adding lights and shade, landscaping, and updating sidewalks and bench pads. This project is possible thanks to donations from organizations in Floyd and surrounding towns, including a $10,000 contribution from the First Security Foundation.

The First Security Foundation is proud to donate to the Lions Park Pickleball Project because it is a tangible representation of one of its core values: community. Through this contribution, the First Security Foundation is investing in the relationships between locals in Floyd, IA, and the surrounding areas.
