First Security Welcomes Sterling Simonson as Credit Manager

First Security Bank & Trust is pleased to announce that Sterling Simonson has joined the bank as Credit Manager. In this role, he will support customers in reaching their goals by providing thoughtful financing solutions, while also ensuring the bank lends responsibly through sound risk management. Additionally, he’ll be involved in leadership and development of the credit department.

Sterling is originally from a small town in North Central Iowa, where he grew up around finance – his dad worked in banking and as a Certified Public Accountant. He later moved to attend Iowa State University, and after college graduation, he moved to Cedar Falls. There, he got his first post-collegiate job as a Bank Examiner for the Iowa Division of Banking (IDOB). He held several examiner positions before being recruited into a 22-year-long career with a banking institution. There, he worked in credit underwriting, loan review, and lending as well as serving in the role of Operations Manager and Chief Credit Officer.

“First Security takes me back to my roots – real community banking,” said Sterling. “I grew and transitioned through many roles over the years in a growing organization, and I felt this opportunity provided a chance for me to apply my learned experiences.” 

Chief Credit Officer Cathi Luett is excited to see Sterling’s knowledge from varied roles enhance collaboration at the bank. “We have the opportunity to enrich the learning environment for our lending and credit team members, as Sterling brings the experience of working with diverse financial partners. I have no doubt he will expand our ability to build and protect the financial legacy of our own customers.”

Outside of work, Sterling and his wife Lisa are very busy with family activities. Together they have 5 children, one son-in-law, two grandchildren (and one on the way!), as well as two dogs. In particular, he enjoys spending time with grandkids, traveling to watch their youngest daughter’s collegiate sporting events, and golfing.
